What Work Makes Me Come Alive

Mother on beach with baby.

I was recently listening to one of my favorite podcasts: Mind Your Business with James Wedmore in which he had a conversation with Jonathan Fields in a discussion about Sparketype. Your Primary Sparketype gives you insight into your nature or “driver” of the work you’re here to do (whether it’s the work you get paid to do, or not).

I love taking these kinds of assessments to learn more about myself. And not surprising at all, my Primary Sparketype is The Nurturer. I ALWAYS feel the drive to help out others. Give comfort. A supportive ear. Ever since I was little. Maybe that’s why when it came to make the decision of whether to go back to work or stay home with this little peanut, nothing sounded more like what I needed to do than be with her.

Having taken the assessment BEFORE finishing the podcast, I hadn’t gotten to hear Jonathan talk about The Nurturer. I will say that when I came back around to it and finished the podcast, I cried hearing the description, because he also mentioned that The Nurturer has to be careful. Double-down on self-care because they can very easily empty their own tank. I guess that’s why once I started this journey to take better care of myself, it very much revolved around my own self-care.

My shadow Sparketype is The Maven who is driven by learning. SO so true. Every time I found myself getting frustrated in previous jobs is when I didn’t feel like I was growing as a person anymore and stopped learning.

The whole concept is so fascinating. And while it is not an assessment to TELL you what you are supposed to be when you grow up because really, you aren’t supposed to be ONE thing. But it gives you insight into what is important to you as you navigate life.

I’m looking forward to figuring out what the next phase of my Nurturer is going to be as the kiddos all leave to start school.

If you’re interested in learning more, you can take the assessment yourself here at www.sparketype.com. It’s free and fascinating!
